Hamza, Pakistan

I am Hamza Ahmad and I have been teaching English as a foreign language since last year. I teach English to children, graduate students and professionals from various cultural backgrounds; and I also help students prepare for English language tests. One thing I would like to say about my teaching experience so far is that preparing adult students and employees for English language exams is not a difficult task but teaching kids is.

As an English language teacher, I am always searching for creative methods to transfer knowledge to students in the most comprehensible and exciting way. My teaching methodology focuses on creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that encourages participation. Further, I organise a variety of engaging activities designed to stimulate creativity and ensure each learner’s growth and success. For instance, one activity I found most effective for vocabulary enrichment of teenage kids is ‘Brainstorm around a word’ given in the book Five Minute Activities by Penny Ur and Andrew Wright (1992). As far as preparing students for English language proficiency exams is concerned, as mentioned earlier it is easy for me because it’s mainly about sharing techniques with students to solve each question.

Now you might be wondering, why do you find teaching children difficult? One explanation for this would be that just like every new EFL teacher I relied more on theoretical explanations rather than using engaging visual content to teach different concepts to kids. However, now I am enhancing my knowledge about different techniques that can be used to teach English language by participating in different workshops and online webinars. Moving forward, I am enthusiastic to continue this journey, eager to take on new challenges and celebrate my students’ triumphs as they achieve new levels of language competency and beyond.
